Lovely! I really enjoyed this. The game's cute and neat and the character feels good to control, and man, your choice of music is amazing! I especially loved the dnb track. As others said, if you ever end up updating this game it'd be cool if you added maybe z as jump and x as dash, that's how it often is in games and it'd be the most comfortable i think. Still, this was great :')
thanks for playing and I’m so happy you enjoyed it! The music is all from a guy named Hudson glover that I found on tik tok. He was kind enough to let me put his songs in my game. I honestly wasn’t planning on working on this game anymore because I didn’t think anyone would play it but this is my first game getting any plays outside of the game jam period so I might come back and do a second level and some improvements based on feedback (especially the button mapping) if I end up doing this I’ll comment on this post.
So, did another playthrough and I liked it. Worked fluently without any problems. Nice game! Just a few things I noticed, which are minor:
Yeah I didn’t even really think of the continuity with the abilities and the end scene in the house. I do think I’m gonna work on this game a little more post jam so I’ll add that because all I have to do is tick some variables on. And yea the story for this game came up later and the jam and didn’t really account for the rockets I suppose I could add some kind of lore like they were invented by the ancestors or something. And as far as controller inputs I probably will add some shoulder and or trigger inputs for dash but I do think a is already pretty well established as jump in gaming and will probably keep that as it will be what’s most intuitive for the majority of players. Thanks for playing and thank you so much for your feedback!
or wait it just occurred to me you were probably talking about keyboard controls. Yea I can totally add those inputs.
I really enjoyed this game.
Thanks for playing and especially thanks for sharing the video of your playthrough! Nicely done! You picked up on the mechanics quicker than any of the other playtesters.
OK. To address the two previous comments game is now unfortunately download only but runs far smoother and does not crash. I left enter as a dash option, but added z and x as well so players can choose.
Really nice game. I think the ENTER is a weird choice as well. But what's far worse is that the game crashed with an error popup. Forgot to screenshot it, but I did make a screenshot of when it happened. And what totally sucks is that I can't start at the last checkpoint. That's such a killer for games, not saving your progress :-( However, the game itself is perfect, nice mechanics, nice style and responsive controls.
You are the second person this has happened to. If you adjust memory settings in your browser it fixes it but I can't realistically expect people to do that in the context of a game jam. Gonna push a windows build later today. I don't play platformers with keyboard so I don't really know what would be appropriate for the dash. What would you recommend or think would be most intuitive for keyboard users? I'll add it in the build so people can choose
What game developers typically do for actions is using the either the ZXC buttons, in combination with the arrows for steering, or for instance the JKL buttons for people that prefer to use WASD to move around. Space for jumping is fine btw, I'm using my thumbs for that, which is not in an awkward position when using either ZXC or JKL.
I'm assuming you're doing the coding work on a desktop, so just try think from the perspective of a gamer and hold your hands on the keys. You will probably feel right away that certain key combos are a bit awkward :)
You know what. I completely forgot that I mapped arrow keys as well and assumed you guys were both playing with WASD which had me confused as to why you would want x or z for dash. But anyways in the current build I went ahead and added both x and z and left enter so people can choose. If I end up doing another build I'll go ahead and throw in jkl too just so everything is covered. I'm surprised neither of you guys were bothered by having to hold up and left/right for angled dashes, but that's something I really can't come up with a solution for unfortunately. Anyways thank you so much for your feedback it helped me improve my game!
Nice and fast response! I'll probably try it again later today or this weekend. I think JKL is less common, so no worries. The angled dashes are perfectly fine. On a keyboard it feels perfectly natural to hold up and left/right to move in an angled direction.
was a good game until it came to using the dash on a keyboard - enter key is a terrible choice !
why not use z or x that are right next to the spacebar ? enter is miles away...
had to give up
Sorry about that:( This game is definitely intended to be played with a game pad as I indicated in the description but I knew I had to include keyboard controls because not everyone would have a game pad. I’m gonna try and push another build today and if I do I’ll add both z and x so people can choose but I still suspect it’ll be a pretty rough experience for anyone who plays on keyboard.
NP . a lot of players on this site use laptop keyboards for control s which is seen as old school and ive added many comments about really odd layouts being used !
look at ori and shallow night for how to do it :)
Gotcha! Uploaded another build and added z and x for dash based on your feedback. Was able to add a little more polish as well. It is unfortunately a download only now though. It was just too big (or too poorly programmed haha) to be a WEBGL game and was crashing for multiple users.
